Its helpful easy to understand. My son experienced bullying this year at school and I got this book to help us I ve been reading it with him and its great It shows kids techniques to stand up for themselves and be assertive, without being overly aggressive It also has examples little exercises quizzes you can talk through with your kid to apply what they learn They use this whole bird analogy through the book which is a little corny but it does the trick to teach a difficult topic I m about 1 2 way through the book with my son and we love it so far and highly recommend This is definitely a must have book for child to read I read this together with my daughter and its really helpful and interesting. Made my son confident What if every kid had a handy toolbox of ways to get along with others That s just what this book is a collection ofconcrete strategies kids can pull out and use to express themselves, build relationships, end arguments and fights, halt bullying, and beat unhappy feelings Like the Mighty Might, which takes all the fun out of teasing And the Thought Chop, which helps kids resist self defeating thoughts And the Squeaky Wheel, a type of persistence that gets results And the Coin Toss, a simple way to resolve small conflicts Each tool is clearly described, illustrated with true to life examples, and accompanied by dialogue and lines kids can practice and use Stories and anecdotes show each tool in action A terrific resource for any young person and any adult committed to teaching social skills Includes a note to adults My 11 year old daughter loved this book She thought it was hilarious and very useful Her favourite technique was the Mighty Mite , which is a way to deal with teasing by deflection She and I really appreciated the straight forward but kid friendly why that Scott Cooper encouraged his readers to stick up for themselves The illustrations were also fun and not too childish I would definitely recommend this book for any child, but especially a shy or reserved kid who was having trouble communicating their needs Thanks Scott for writing a great book to help kids I thought this would be an ace book for my 10 year old aspie He read it avidly But when he tried to use the techniques at school, he said the other children didn t behave any nicer I think it s lovely to make these guides, sadly there are children in the playground who don t have special needs but are little sods and don t play nicely however you ask them For my aspie with his black and white thinking he was disappointed I still think the book has value, but is worth bearing in mind that your child may feel differently Speak Up and Get Along helped me to help my child with some difficult situations she was going through at school It was nice to see the confidence in her eyes after we spoke about the strategies in this book It was even better when she came home from school and was able to tell me how she used them I can see how the strategies in this book will continue to be useful as my child grows I m very happy I bought this book Thanks Scott Cooper for sharing your knowledge. A very unique book that looks at behaviour of birds and relates it to people A great book for teachers and parents. Great book that teaches social skills to kids at school Has exercises and scenarios to role play with your kids as well.
